I've been letting my kids stay alone at home from age 9 or 10, and the older ones have tended younger ones at that age too, but I haven't done as well with letting them go *other* places (besides parks that are close by) on their own. That seems like something they'd really enjoy and that would give them a lot of confidence. And temple square does seem like a great place to start! Lots to see and explore, and friendly people if they need to ask directions or for help with something.
